I remember seeing ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ at a Drive-In on my seventh birthday and have been hooked on animated characters and cartoons since. So I grabbed my crayons and started to copy Peanuts, Garfield and Hagar comic strips out of the newspaper and was consumed by Phantom and Uncle Scrooge Comics. Little wonder I gravitated towards licensing work for many years as it gave me a chance to work with all those characters I revelled in as a kid albeit at arm’s length. It wasn’t until the late 90’s when Disney and Warner Bros. Australia approved me as a character artist that I truly got a feel of what it was like to create characters with
depth and personality. The opportunities to do something with my obsession and originate my own characters never really eventuated until relatively recently in my career so over the past five years or so I have been making up for lost time I have taken great pride in coming up with a plethora of characters for clients as well as myself. Some of my brainchilds (is that even a word?) have gone on to achieve commercial success, others in to the marketplace whilst the rest sit on the backburner waiting for their chance to break it into the Big Time. Whatever the results it’s still the best way to pass one’s time in my humble opinion.
